Celebrating Ravel

A new season for 2025/2026 with some new faces at Wymondham Symphony Orchestra!

This autumn we'll be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the French composer Maurice Ravel (born in 1875). Despite initially receiving little acclaim from the musical elite of the Paris Conservatoire, by the 1920s and 30s he was internationally renowned as France's greatest living composer. A master of orchestration, and often connected to the impressionist movement, he is known for his precise and detailed classical forms. To celebrate what would be his 150th birthday year, our Autumn concert will feature two of his most well-known works: Pavane pour une infante defunte as well as his orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.

To accompany these two pieces, the program will also feature Die Fledermaus Overture by Johann Strauss II (arguably his most famous operetta) as well as the short, punchy Slavonic Dance no3 op 72 by Dvořák.

We're delighted to this start this new season welcoming our new Musical Director Theo Vinden! Find out more about him in the "Profiles" section on the left.

Wymondham Symphony Orchestra...

is a friendly, lively and ambitious group of musicians that plays regular concerts at a variety of locations within the Norfolk area. We have received much critical acclaim for our sensitive and involving perfomances.

We attract members from all walks of life and provide them with the satisfaction of playing in an ensemble that has the skill and confidence to play exciting and demanding works.

We have built up an enviable reputation, and are able to attract professional soloists of the highest calibre. We also encourage young talented soloists from Norfolk to play with us, often their first concerto with a symphony orchestra.

Generally, we play three concerts a year, although we occasionally undertake additional events. We also hold an annual Open Rehearsal (see the Rehearsals page for more details) and have regular social events. It’s not just about making music - we also like to have fun!
